print B/W and color page in 1 document

In Pub2003 is it possible to have aswell B/W and color pages together?
A simple test; make a new document, import a color image and covert it to
grayscale. But when I the print such a page with grayscale images on a color
laser (LJ8550) and look at the pagecounter of this printer, it still counts
it as a color page. Meaning that the drum did 4 passes instead of 1.
Is there a way to combine real monochroom pages (with grayscales) and full
color pages in one document?
I already tried in the Commercial Print Option to set 1 color instead of
RGB, also convert the image to B/W instead of grayscale but stil get color
pages on the printcounter! Publisher still saves the color info about the
image to be able to revert back to a color image, maybe this has something
do do with?

What happens if you convert the image to gray scale in a paint program? I looked at
the documentation of your printer on the Canon site, there is no definitive
explanation on how this printer handles gray scale in mixed documents. What results
do you get from other applications?

Which Canon printer do you think Kurt has?

The first printer that sprang to my mind on reading the OP was the LaserJet
8550 MFP
(8550 twigged first, then LJ = LaserJet)

First, you must set up your document as CMYK. Second, DON'T change pictures
to grayscale. I don't even know why this function is in there. I see no use
for it and it only causes problems. Leave the setting as automatic and
RECOLOR the picture to Black (100% K). Make sure all type on those pages is
100%K. Print composit CMYK. If your printer has autosensing, it will only do
a B/W click.

I'd say he has a Hewlett Packard, not a Canon (even though Canon may have
made the print engine). As to the color vs. grayscale issue, converting the
image to grayscale prior to importing should resolve the issue of color
information being available to Publisher and therefore causing a scan for
each color.

I don't know where I got the Canon from, but I did peruse the HP stuff. Not Canon. A
senior moment...

It is indeed a HP LaserJet 8550.
My document is set as RGB as its tsated as best for desktop printing (Extra>
Commercial Print Options> Pint Color).
I can change it there to CMYK, no problem, colors are displayed slitghty
different.
But how can I recolor a picture to 100%K? Will I then still have grayshades
like in a B/W photo?
Il also like to use a B/W background theme on the same pages, some shaped
rectangulars in B/W shades.

IN the same box (format picture) that lets you change the picture from
automatic to grayscale, there is a button to recolor picture on the right.
You will still have grayshades. Background is the same. If it's an imported
graphic, recolor it. If it's an EPS, you will need to respec the EPS in your
drawing program. If you are using drawn elements, use the "more colors"
option in the recolor box and select a black tint from the bottom pallet.

Indeed, now I have a 100%K grayscale image and when I look under Extra
Option for commercial printing >Colorprint the Radiobutton CMYK is choosen.
There under the Tab Inkcolors I can see also that CMY is NOT in use and K is
in use. (Maybe the menu names are not fully correct, I translate them from a
native language menu)
But strangly enough the HP LaserJet STILL prints a 4-pass CMYK.
Then I had another look at the printerdriver, on the Color tab there's an
option CMYK inktset emulation. When I change this from the default SWOP to
Device, then the color laser 8550 seems to print the grayscale page in pass.
I do't understand this option but it works!

Device is the correct setting for what you are doing.. Changing to "device"
lets the printer manage the color, and therefore lets the autosensing
function work. I never use SWOP unless I am using the printer to create a
proof for a press job. By using the SWOP setting your printer was treating
everything as managed CMYK.

You should be bypassing Publisher and use the printer driver ability to
print as black/grayscale only.

That would print everything in black/grayscale. He want to be able to send a
mixed document and not be charged color clicks for a B/W page. His driver
can do it. He just needs to set up his document properly to do it. Sound
like he's there.
