Problem Creating Templates

Version: 2004
Operating System: Mac OS X 10.3 (Panther)

I have created a two-page template. I've checked "different first page" and inserted a next-page section break at the end of the text on page one so I am able to adjust the size of the headers and footers on subsequent pages. BUT...When I use this template for documents that are just one page long, I can't omit the template's second page, even though it is blank. What am I doing wrong? Or do I have to create a separate one-page template for short documents?

You're not doing anything wrong. That's the effect of a "Next Page" section
break, it creates a next page :)

Change that section break to "Continuous" and it will not create a new page,
but it will still allow you to adjust the headers and footers on any new
page that might result from typing.

Word makes up the heeders and footers before it processes the text on a
page. So you can place that section break anywhere after the first
character on the first page: the headers and footers will not take effect
until Word creates a new page.

Hope this helps

Does this happen to be a letterhead template? If so you may find this
article helpful, especially the section on multipage letterhead. Don't let
the PC orientation dissuade you - the technique is the same even though the
dialogs are a bit different:

Hi Debra:

Thanks.

Section breaks are like caviar... Very much an acquired taste :)

Cheers

Thank you both. Using the continuous section break solved my problem.

And just like caviar, if you binge on them, you're eventually
gonna get REALLY sick!

Oh, Jeff does... He has his own personal A380, which he bought from Prince
Faisal of Saudi Arabia when the man ran a bit short of cash.

Jeff is stinking rich. Me, I am just a working schmuck with a Ford and a
mortgage :)

Cheers

I wish.

Actually, I've never tasted caviar, but I *HAVE* had the
occasional misfortune of having to deal with someone's document
that was saturated with section breaks...

- Jeff

P.S., I used to have a .380 but when I was unemployed for quite a
while, I had to sell it when my concealed carry license expired.

Oh, Caviar tastes like Vegemite :)

Which is why Australians are waiting for the rest of the world to catch up
and get on the right page as far as Vegemite is concerned :)

Your former .380 would have been a good solution to users who produce
documents saturated with section breaks :)

Cheers
