Problem going from Visio links to Word document

L

levu

I was able to create links from a visio shape to a bookmarks in words
document.

When I select the link from a shape, it opens up the Word document and puts
the cursor to the correct boomark. However, once the Word document is
opened, this no longer works. Word window only come to the foreground if the
window was in minimized mode. Regardless, whether Word is minimized or not,
the cursor does not get move to the right bookmark.

Does any one know what I can do to correct this problem?
Many thanks.

Hi levu,

I could not found any problem.
I need more details about your matter.
Detail about steps of your operation, about versions, etc....

i am using Visio 2003 and Words
To re-create the problem:
1. Create a book mark in a Word document. Close the document.
2. From Visio, choose any shape and "hyperlink" it to the bookmark in step 1
3. Now <right-clik> on the shape w/ the link and then select to go to the
link.
This will brings up the Word doc with the cursor placed at the link. This
is how is should be.
4. Now move to different location in the Word document ... so the cursor is
no longer at the bookmark. Leave the document open.
5. Do step 3 again. I didn't get the same result as described in 3.
Instead, the Word document is still in the background with no cursor NOT in
the right location.

Hi levu,

I may have not correctly catch what you kindly explained.
But the cursor is found always placed at the first
beggining in the word document even if Word document
has book mark.
I don't know how can I link from Visio drawing to the
particular book mark in the Word document.

levu,

Your description of the behavior when following successive links to
bookmarks in a Word document is exactly correct. Or, I should say, exactly
incorrect. This is a long-standing "feature" in Visio 2003 that is corrected
in Visio 2007.

Using Visio 2003, the only way to reliably connect to a series of bookmarked
locations in Word is to close the Word document in between following each
hyperlink.

In Visio 2007, the behavior is what you expect -- click a link, go to a
bookmarked location; click another link, go to that bookmark.

If you choose to upgrade to Visio 2007, be aware of one new "feature" that
will affect you if you use Office 2007 and IE7:
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/927009/en-us
The gist is that for Word 2003 and IE 6/7, the default behavior on clicking
a web page link in a Word document is for the doc to open inside IE. With IE7
and Word 2007, the doc opens in Word NOT in IE -- but guess what? Links to
bookmarks in Word 2007 don't work.

Thank-you Scott ... especially for the warning. You figure with such an
annoyance "feature" MS would made a correction w/o introducing another one.

So there really is no work around to this except to close the Word document
each time? Now i'll have to deliver the bad news to my customer!

If there is a workaround, I haven't found it.

On the other hand, out of curiosity, I just retested the issue with Visio
2003 on a different system than the one I was using earlier today -- and
darned if the Visio 2003-to-Word behavior isn't exactly what you and I both
want.

I'm going to have to probe deeper...

I would really appreciate if you let me know of your findings. I am on XP
PRO O/S.
Thanks.
