Problem running A2K DB on Access2003 Please help!

Patrick

Sorry if this seems like a double posting but nobody
responded in "microsoft.public.access"

Is there a problem running a databse developed in
Access2000 on a machine using Access2003?

I have developed a program in Access2000
that runs on machines with Access2002 just fine.

But now we are attempting to run the app on a machine
running Access2003.
When Access starts we get a message that says
something about "...expressions are blocked...."
it warns us that we must have Jet4 SP8 installed,
which we do. Once I finally get into my app we are getting
debug errors right away.

Is there something I should be aware of?
The program runs fine On Access2002.

Thanks

You are welcome.

Seriously, I cannot answer your question as I haven't had "a problem".

I would check the library references and make sure that none of them are
"missing".

I would hazard the guess that the reason you didn't get a response is that no
one had relevant information to share with you.

You didn't say how you responded to the security warning message. You didn't
say what specific debug errors you are getting. I can't speak for others, but
for my part I passed this question by since I lacked information to help you -
both from you and from my experience.

LONG WINDED REPLY on REFERENCES follows:

To do its job, Access (like most modern programs) makes use of various external
program and object libraries that provide functionality that may be shared among
applications. For example, Access always uses the Visual Basic for Applications
library, the version-appropriate Access Object Library, and the OLE Automation
library. References to the specific library files, including their locations,
are stored with your database. But these library modules may not be in the same
location on different machines, especially if they have different versions of
Microsoft Office. If you move a database from one machine to another, these
references may be "broken"; that is, one or more of the library files may not
be where the stored reference says it is.

When this happens, you need to take steps to let Access repair the broken
reference(s) ON THE COMPUTER WHERE THE FAILURE IS OCCURING.

Here are MVP Doug Steele's instructions for how to do it:

Any time functions that previously worked suddenly don't, the first thing to
suspect is a references problem.

This can be caused by differences in either the location or file version of
certain files between the machine where the application was developed, and where
it's being run (or the file missing completely from the target machine). Such
differences are common when new software is installed.

On the machine(s) where it's not working, open any code module (or open the
Debug Window, using Ctrl-G, provided you haven't selected the "keep debug window
on top" option). Select Tools | References from the menu bar. Examine all of the
selected references.

If any of the selected references have "MISSING:" in front of them, unselect
them, and back out of the dialog. If you really need the reference(s) you just
unselected (you can tell by doing a Compile All Modules), go back in and
reselect them.

If none have "MISSING:", select an additional reference at random, back out of
the dialog, then go back in and unselect the reference you just added. If that
doesn't solve the problem, try to unselect as many of the selected references as
you can (Access may not let you unselect them all), back out of the dialog, then
go back in and reselect the references you just unselected. (NOTE: write down
what the references are before you delete them, because they'll be in a
different order when you go back in)

For far more than you could ever want to know about this problem, check out
http://members.rogers.com/douglas.j.steele/AccessReferenceErrors.html

Just so you know: the problem will occur even if the library that contains the
specific function that's failing doesn't have a problem.

So, follow those instructions and see if your problem goes away.

It sounded like something to do with the new security measures in Access 2003.
Keywords to search for (including in this or related newsgroups) could be
"Digital Certificates" or "Sandbox mode". Since I don't have Access2003, I'm
hardly in an authoritative position to respond.

Another "common respondent"<g> who knows a bit about this subject, is Brendan
Reynolds. So search for posts he's already made. You have already searched the
last few hundred posts of this and related newsgroups, haven't you Patrick?

(This is NOT an MS site, it's merely hosted by MS. It's just a newsgroup of
users/peers. Anyone responding, does so unpaid and at their own pleasure. It
is also completely unmoderated. If I went to a Rolling Stones concert, I could
wander amongst the crowd asking what was their first hit. I shouldn't get
upset if none of the few hearing my voice above the unholy din...knew...)

You're probably thinking of my posts on the subject of digital certificates
and code signing, Chris, but I think this may be a different issue. I have
not experienced this myself, but I have a vague memory of seeing a few
references to difficulties with Jet SP8 and Windows XP SP2 - something about
SP2 installing a later build of the Jet SP, and Access 2003 not picking up
on that? I'm really not sure. Anyone else know what I'm talking about, or am
I mis-remembering the whole thing?
