Problem with Bullets in Word XP

Ever since I switched to Word's XP version, I have been
unable to create a basic, simple bulleted list. When I
select a list of text items and click the bulleted list
icon, very weird things happen. The text gets moved
(usually way out to the far left margin--the first time,
then other places after that), and the bullets do not
appear. I've never had this problem with earlier versions
of Word. With XP it happens every time; it's not
intermittent. Seems to be a bug in XP and is extremely
annoying.

Does anyone know a way to fix this, or should I trash XP
and go back to an earlier version of Word?

Generally speaking, it's much more reliable to use a bulleted style (such as
one of the built-in List Bullet series) than the toolbar button.
