Problem with charts in 2007 version

I cannot find my post, so I have to start again. I wanted to know
1. how to avoid vanishing charts from my slides after closing and reopening
presentation and
2. being able to open Excel data of the pasted charts.
Anyway the suggestion to open Excel first before editing charts is not
working.

But going through all the post of my interest, this is what I did: the Pack1
was installed, and the MSGraph was enabled by the help desk people in my
company.

Now, what I found is that if I try to insert a chart within PowerPoint, it
is opening as in 2003 version of PowerPoint and I cannot apply any of the
option from 2007, the font also is Calibri, which is not a template font.

I also: opened one of an Excel with charts I used for the presentation
before, copied a chart and just pasted it in PowerPoint.
It gave me an option to choose from so: I did it on 2 slides; for 1st one I
selected Chart (linked to Excel data), for the 2nd – Excel Chart (entire
workbook). For both charts I selected Use Destination Theme. This worked
beautifully. However, once presentation was closed and reopened, I could not
edit data at all; and I tried to open an Excel first too. Linking charts are
not an option – I cannot apply Theme colors.

How can I solve the problem?

I have Windows XP (but some people have Vista already).

Thank you, appreciate your help.
