Problems with Numbering

I am having a problem with paragraph numbering. My work insists that documents are presented in a specific format and I have successfully customised an outline number format that is to the exact spec that I need. Generally it works fine and all paragraphs and sub paras number as advertised.

But, and here's my problem, sometimes a document just won't continue to number in the manner I want. I always write the words of the text first and then do all the formatting. Within a document I have various headings that are normally formatted as normal text. So, for example, I'll number paragraphs 1 to 5 with no issue and the I get to a heading which doesn't need numbering. After the heading, I select paragraph 6 and hit the number button. Often it just reverts to '1'. Sometimes I can select continue numbering and all is good. However, often the continue numbering option is greyed out and the only way I can restart the same format is by using the format painter, which works but is inconvenient because after this point, I have to do it from then on. When I check on the numbering dialogue/settings window in the format list, the customised list is reset to '1'.

The other issue is when I save and close the document. Once reopened, the numbering is still there, but any new numbering I want to do reverts to a default format.

Has anyone else experienced these issues. I'd be really grateful for some assistance or guidance.

Thanks in advance

Hi Robbie:

Word numbering is comprised of "Lists" of paragraphs.

There are two kinds: "Single Level" and "Outline". A Single Level list will
begin a new list whenever a different style appears between the paragraphs.
An Outline List will never begin a new list, but the numbering can be set to
"Restart on higher".

You need to understand the basics of Word numbering for this to make sense.
I wrote it all out here:

http://word.mvps.org/FAQs/numbering/WordsnumberingExplained.htm

After you have ploughed through all of that, come back here and search for
the correspondence between myself and Norm ( Norm <[email protected]> )
where we go into extensive detail on setting up List Styles.

Then, if you have any further questions, by all means ask away :)

Hope this helps
