Project 2003: "Start as soon as Possible" changes task to milestone!

This is driving me around the bend:

I am trying to link tasks to flow in a logical order on a 650+ task
project plan left behind by the terminated former manager. The same
resource is assigned at 100% to the 6 tasks I am trying to link. If I
highlight and link the tasks, the successor task turns into a
milestone! The task has a work value assigned, and that doesn't
change. Duration changes to 0. If I open the Task Info window, I can
uncheck the milestone box, but the task still has a work value, zero
duration and shows up as a split task on the Gantt chart. The task
constraint now becomes "Finish no later than" with the date that the
task should finish on if duration was calculated correctly. If I
change the constraint back to "As soon as possible", it goes back to a
milestone!

What am I doing wrong? ACK!

Thanks in advance.

Bruce.

I suspect that the task has a successor that is "Pinned" in time with a
"must start on" or other date constraint. Free up its successor tasks and
see if that clears up your challenge. (check for ALAP, MSO, and MFO
constraints by adding the "Constraint Type" column to one of your tables.)
