Project 2007 PWA - My Tasks marking fields as read only

Hi there,

I am new to PWA 2007 and am trying to figure out if on the 'My Tasks' I can
make the fields 'Work', '%Work complete' and 'actual work' read only. I don't
mind if task assignees alter the 'remaining work' as I don't think this comes
through from the timesheets.

The reason I don't want these fields brought in, is that during testing I
have managed to get the 'My Tasks' and the 'timesheets' to not be in sync. I
also feel that having two ways to enter in the timespent could cause some
training issues.

Any help would be gratefully received.

If you require that the My Timesheet page and the My Tasks page be
constantly in sync, then do the following to enforce this requirement:

1. Log into PWA with administrator permissions.
2. Click the Server Settings link in the Quick Launch menu.
3. Click the Task Settings and Display link in the Time and Task Management
section of the Server Settings page.
4. In the Protect User Updates section of the page, select the Time Entry
by Timesheet Only option.
5. Click the Save button.

Otherwise, the answer to your question is no, you cannot lock those fields
in the My Tasks page. Hope this helps.

Dale ,

Thank you very much for taking the time to reply. I am very grateful.

Your answer was kind of what I expected from Pwa 2007.

I have come across the option to select 'time entry by timesheet only' but
as I indicated I still wanted task assignees to be able to re-estimate
remaining time, am I right in saying this is not possible from just using the
timesheets?

Yes, I believe that resources cannot adjust the Remaining Work option if you
use the "Time Entry by Timesheet Only" option. Why don't you use a simple
methodology for entering time and task progress instead? Here's a process
that I could recommend personally:

1. Enter time in the My Timesheet page on a daily basis.
2. At the end of the week, submit the Timesheet for approval.
3. Import time from the Timesheet to the My Tasks page.
4. Adjust the Rem. Work on any task as needed.
5. Submit the task updates for approval.

I think that would probably solve your problem. Hope this helps.

Hi Dale,

Thanks again for replying so quickly.
I see what you were getting at and it came close to what I wanted but I
think I have managed to get what I need by using the 'My Assignments' view on
'My Tasks'; Quite by accident I clicked on the Progress field in this view
and up popped a weekly timesheet view which allowed hours to be entered
without the need to import a timesheet. This seems to be a real simple way of
allowing users to enter in their timesheet data but I just am amazed that the
field does more than allow the % to be altered (which I didn't want the task
assignees to enter anyway).

In Project 2003, resources could enter actual hours, remaning time, and time
spent on non-working or administrative time - all one one timesheet. This
was a way of communicating status back to the project manager and also
accounting for all time.

It is vital to us to track progress on a dialy basis and see where things
are ahead of schedule, on time, or behind schedule. We ask people to submit
time daily, and we level resources daily. We have tight deadlines and this
allows us to adjust quickly.

But with Project 2007 we now have a My Timesheet that allows entry of admin
time but doesn't allow for entry of remaining time. And we have a My Tasks
view that allows for entry of remaining time but not of admin hours. Ugh.
This seems so cumbersome - compliance with the timesheet policy was a
struggle with 2003 and now it seems to have been made more complicated and
more burdensome for the end user (all for good reason I'm sure but it doesn't
lessen the pain).

Does anyone have any contructive suggestions to help solve this problem? I
long for the good old days when people could enter actual time, remaining
time and admin time on one screen, click submit and that was that!

Just do it like you have been doing it in the past.....use My Tasks, and
create/publish administrative projects...
