Yes, versions of Project 98 and later will support this. Establish (on
paper) what the total cost of one output unit will be. For example, one
widget is 10 hours for Fred, 2 Hours for Mike, $300 in materials. Now you
have a base timeframe and base cost for each Widget.
Create a task "Manufacture 23 Widgets" and load sufficeint resource units
and duration to make the 23 Widgets. Baseline this task with an appropriate
measure for baseline calculations (%Complete or Physical%Complete)
Now, you can take credit for the task in terms of %Complete (actually, I
would use Physical %Complete) for each group of widgets produced. The task
will be complete when all 23 Widgets are created.
You can consider setting calculations to manual and enter your actual costs
as the come from your timekeeping and material purchase orders.
Now, your Earned Value for these tasks will let you know how you are
performing compared to your baseline in terms of both cost and schedule.
Of course you can create additional tasks for additional groupings of Widgets.
