Publisher 98 will not run

I have used Publisher 98 for years and all of a sudden It
will not come up. I receive the following: "Microsoft
Publisher for Windows 95 Version 5.0 has encountered a
problem and needs to close." I am running Windows XP Home
Edition and have sent in the error report a number of
times. I have uninstalled and re-installed a number of
time and that did not help. Where is the conflict?

Does this error appear in safe mode? Update your printer driver. Most Publisher
errors of this type are directly related to your printer.

I never cease to be amazed at this "Update your printer driver " fix to
people who say they have been working for years without a problem.
If the OP said (or was asked) had he updated his printer, I could agree but
I cannot see how it could be a problem with no change to the hardware.

Publisher is very sensitive to printer drivers. It saves all printer information with
the file, if any change is made to the driver or it becomes corrupt Publisher will
throw up errors. Especially 98.

I updated the printer driver. The program does run in
Safe Mode but not in Normal Mode. I uninstalled and
reinstalled in safe mode also.

Try updating your video driver from the website of your video card
manufacturer.

I went to the Toshiba site and downloaded the latest
NVIDIA GeForce2 Go driver. I still get the crazy
error "MS Publisher for Windows 95 bversion 5.0 has
encountered a problem and needs to close. We are sorry
for the inconvernience." I still don't understand the 95
version 5.0 when I am running Pub. 98.

Mary,
I do not have the Pub 95 disk (haven't had for years).
It was probably thrown away 5 years ago when 98 was put
on. Pub 95 is not on the list of programs that can be
removed either. It's strange that it took that long for a
problem to show up. The only hidden place I acn find
Publisher 5.0 listed is in the registry. Dare I take it
out???
