Publisher and Word printer margins unexpected printer results

In Microsoft Publisher, I set up a custom size page ( 5.5 X 8.50) Statement
size. Printer is HP 7960 Photosmart with margins minimized. Page margins set
as .25 top, bottom, right and left side. Looks perfect on the screen but in
print preview there is extra space added to the left side of the page. When
it is printed the left margin is diminished by about 1/8:eek:f what is set in
the document.. This is happening with another printer as well, HP K8600. I
feel it is a Office software issue and have been trying for weeks to solve
it.
In Word the document looks correct in the preview, but subtracts 1/8 inch
from the left margin in printing. I am so lost! Where have I set margins in
error?

When you setup your custom size are you getting two copies per letter sheet? Or
do you have stock 5.5 x 8.5? When you do a print preview is the preview correct
in Publisher? You might want to make sure of your printer margins limitations.
There is a tutorial here.

What version Office are you using?

The sheet prints as set up - 1 per page. I am running Windows XP 2002, SVP3
& Office Standard 2003, Publisher 2007, recently downloaded (after problems
began). The Publisher preview appears to have extra space in the left
margin. When it prints, the left margin is aabout 3/16 and the right is
about 5/16. The margins are set to .25 all around. In Word the preview
appears correct, however the print result is the same as above.

Maybe your drivers need updating...
HP has a K8600 driver with a June 2009 timestamp

Have you checked to see if the stock is picking up correctly or the stock is
snug against the feed.

If worse comes to worse you can delete the border or save the entire publication
as a picture and print with the HP software.

Try converting the publication to a PDF, then print. Microsoft has a save as PDF
add-in that is quite good. It only works with Office 2007.

The stock is installed correctly, and I have the latest driver installed. In
Publisher 2007 the preview now looks correct. When I print, however, the .25
margin set in the program decreases automatically to 3/16 and the right
margin increases to 5/16 regardless of how it previews.

When i convert to a .pdf, it looks great (.25 margins on both sides).
however, 3/16 and 5/16 margins print.

Sounds like the printer is shifting the stock during print. Could you
compensate by shifting the margins in the opposite direction - to 5/16
and 3/16?

don't some printer drivers have "offset" adjustments?...like for fine tuning
label outputs?

I have two HP printers that I printed with the poster's specs, both printed
correctly. One printer is a PhotoSmart the other a LaserJet. The PhotoSmart
printers are not the best when it comes to custom size stock, but if you are
careful the print will be successful. Offset printers are mainly commercial.

Thanks for the replies. I did shift the left margin 3/16 to the right and it
did print in the correct place although it previewed 7/16 from the left page
edge. The right line disappeared from the printed page.

I have not heard of "off set adjustments" but it sounds interesting.
As an aside ,my Office software has started flashing an quick "installing"
block before starting a program. I had tried a Pubisher 2007 trial and
subsequently purchased and upgraded Publisher. This all transpired after the
printer problems though.
