Is there a downloadable program (preferably free) that just READS
Publisher (.pub) files?
If so, where is it downloadable from please?

I neglected to say that I am running Publisher 2003 on Windows XP - if
that makes any difference.

There is no downloadable viewer - although for a small fee you can order the
Publisher 2003 demo on CD-ROM, which will function as a viewer after the
trial period expires.

There is no viewer...aside from ordering the
30 day trial version of Pub 2003 from the
following link. When it expires it will still function
as a viewer.

If you have Publisher 2003...I suspect you
are wanting the viewer for someone else?

If you create a .pdf file...anyone who has
the free Adobe Reader can vew the file.

Try this...

Download and install the following free PDF Creator.

PrimoPDF
http://primopdf.com/

With your new program installed...open your project
in Publisher and go to...File / Print.

On your Print screen...open the drop window and
select PrimoPDF as your printer.

Click...OK...now you will see the PrimoPDF screen
and you can browse to a save folder.

When you click...OK..your .pdf file will be created
in your save folder.

Thank you for your feedback John and thanks to Ed as well.
Both the .pdf option and the Publisher demo option sound viable.
I do have a registered version of Publisher 2003 and the viewer was
intended for someone else. Basically, the idea was for me to email my
publisher files to him and receive feedback regarding possible
alterations. I will discuss with him which way to go with this.

I am very surprised that no Publisher viewer exists in its own right
though. I just assumed that as a Word viewer exists then a Publisher
viewer would too.

We have opted for the MS Publisher trial version as the viewer. This
has been decided because the Acrobat viewer seemed to have trouble
collating the pages properly when they were in booklet form. There
probably was a workaround for this in Acrobat viewer but the Publisher
trial allows printing of files after the expiration period so, for the
sake of relative simplicity, we have opted to go with Publisher. Like
me, the person at the other end of the email has a printer with duplex
capability.
There may be an import duty (I live in the UK) but I believe that
items "for educational purposes" are exempt. Well, OK. Maybe that's
stretching a definition but it is at least partly true.

I've investigated further as the collation issue in Acrobat reader was
bizarre. First it worked and then it didn't. I now realise that the
print settings are not saved with the output file so they need to be
tweaked manually each time.
I guess I could haved saved myself a few pounds (sterling) if I'd
noticed that before but maybe the Publisher trial is the better option
anyway in order to save the persistent tweaking of the print settings.
