Question about assigning resource groups to a task

B

Bob Hanson

Hello All,

I am trying to determine if there is a way to assign a resource group
percentage against a task vs an individual within the group.

I am attempting to get resource loads against teh groups vs the individuals
within the group.

I am using MS project 2003.

Thanks in advance for any help :)

If by resource groups you are referring to the "Group" field on the Resource
Sheet view, sorry but you can't use it for assigning resources at all. What
you CAN do is create what I call "aggregate resources" (to distinguish them
from the defined Resource Group field name). For example if you have 5
carpenters who are essentially interchangeable, you can choose to either
list them all by their individual names OR you can enter a single name
"Carpenters" and indicate that there are 5 of them by setting their Maximum
Allocation to 500%. Careful though, because you can't have it both ways -
there's no way to list Jim as an individual and then have Project understand
he is one of the 5 Carpenter resources. If you choose to go with the
aggregate, an assignment of 100% indicates there's one carpenter on the
task, 200% there're two of them, and so forth. If the skills are
sufficiently unique to each person that it matters exactly WHO is assigned
to a task go with the individual listing. But if they basically have the
same skills - like with 4 custodians it probably isn't too important exactly
which of them is on the south end of a north-bound broom - use the aggregate
for the project plan and let the foreman on the job actually parcel out the
specific work assignments.
