Ramdomly Read-Only problems

Word 2002 on Windows Server 2000 and Outlook 2002, all
with current SP and updates.

When opening Word docs, randomly they will open as read
only, and there is no chance that someone else has the
file open or has recently had it open. This happens only
when the user has Outlook open and is using Word as their
e-mail editor. Close Outlook and all is well.
I have deleted all files in the Temp directory. I have
deleted the dot files in case they were corrupt. I can't
end the process winword.exe because Outlook needs it. I
have tried copying and pasting to create new docs and they
also have the problem. I see lots of posts about this but
no solutions. Can anybody help?

We have the same problem.
When attempting to open word documents that they have full access to
user randomly gets a Read-Only copy. They are not prompted that th
document is read-only, however read-only is displayed in the title bar
If the user closes the document and opens it back up again the documen
usually opens with full access, however opening another word documen
will more than likely cause the same problem.

The PCs are all running Win2K SP4 with the latest patches and Office X
with the latest patches. The problem has been happening to random user
on different PCs since we upgraded our file server to Windows 200
Server a couple of years ago. It was around that time or before tha
most pcs were upgraded to Win2K. It can't be a network issue as th
same users get the same problem opening up local files. A
administrators logged onto their pcs we don't get the problem (howeve
we rarely open outlook) and having outlook opened with word as th
e-mail editor appears to cause the problem.

We also have PCs with windows XP and Office 2003 using word as thei
e-mail editor which have never experienced this problem.

Deleting the users windows profile may temporarily ressolve the proble
however as occurances are reasonably random it is hard to pinpoint
fix.

If anyone has any ideas we are all ears!

Does the previous poster have any updates or other links to peopl
posting a simular problem
