re-number footnotes in pasted documents

I pasted together a number of documents initially typed separately. Each had
its own footnotes. Now, after the pasting, the footnotes are continuous. I
need to have starting with each chapters. I am unable to start each chapter
with new numbers 1,2,3. I tried everything.

It seems that the pasting together of the douments threw the ffootnote
function off. Even when I set the number box at 1, the fn appears as the
continuous of those in previous chapters.

Please help!!!! My mnuscript is 660 pages long. I cannot do this manually.

Try creating a "master" document that contains nothing but
links to the individual documents (chapters?). That should
keep each document's footnote numbering independent of the
others. An alternative would be to paste the documents
together as separate sections, which should also preserve
individual footnote numbering. However with 660 pages,
you're probably better off using the master document
technique--as long as you don't need to do global searches
and replaces.
