read only files

I have an application whereby I update comparitives using
dat links to previous years files. This morning I have
tried to do this but the file i am trying to link with is
locked and i get the following message

"Cannot access read only document "file-name"". I work on
a network and all files are on the server.

I checked out frequently asked questions but their
suggstion of clearing out C:\windows\temp is not doing the
trick. I am on Excel 2000.

I have checked out the properties on all files. Non of
them have the "read only" box ticked.
Please help

If you're on a network, then you should have a network administrator a
least and probably also an IT staff who could help you more effectivel
than newsgroup respondents.

If your files are on network or local NTFS drives, it's possible you n
longer have Read permission for the file. This is separate and distinc
from the Read-only file attribute (and provides much stronge
protection). If you also lack file system permission to change th
file's permissions, then you'll need your network administrator t
grant you at least Read permission for the file. That's something non
of the rest of us participating in this newsgroup can do for you
