How can I save my Word documents to my disk when it says "Cannot save
document -the file is marked as 'Read Only'.

How can I change that to allow me to save to my disk??

Open the folder that contains the file in Widows Explorer. Make sure the file
isn't open in Word. Right-Click on the File in Windows Explorer. Uncheck Read
Only.
If this doesn't work, you may have it in a folder or saved in a Drive that
forces all contents to Read Only, so you would try making a copy of the file
to another location--like the Desktop.

It's not a good practice to save Word docs to transportable media (floppies,
CD or DVD,) rather save the files to your local hard drive and then COPY to
tranportable media.
The primary cause of corrupted Word documents is the result of saving
directly to transportable media.
