reading pane

My reading pane selection in Outlook 2003, is greyed out. It was working fine
yesterday, but on startup today it is unavailable. I have tried a detect &
repair, but no luck. Any reason why this could happen, & can I fix it without
having to reload?

Meesage is selected, but the reading pane remains greyed. Interestingly
enough, when I do a custom toolbar, & drag & drop in the reading pane icon,
it works perfectly, & I can get my reading pane back.
