Really big files from "Export to Word"

I have exported a presentation (around 16 MB) to Word using the
Powerpoint XP command. The format is notes on slide side.
The resulting file is huge: 145 MB!!!
Selecting link to slides does not make any difference.
The only method to obtain a more realistic sized file is to enter Word (it takes several
minutes), save as HTML then reload it and save as DOC. The resulting file is around 20 MB.
I'm doing anything wrong?
