reduce file size of .tiff images for a publication

How can you reduce the file size of a .tiff image without losing the
resolution? Can it be done using MS Office Picture Manager. I know I can
resize and compress, just not sure which one if either to use.

Either will print fine. The reason JPEG's are so small is because when
you save an image, or document, as a JPEG a bit of the image is actually
deleted. Every time a JPEG gets saved progressively more data is
deleted. If you do need to save images as JPEG's always use the highest
quality setting. This causes the minimal amount of data loss and still
provides a decent amount of space savings. TIFF images can be compressed
too but they do not have the same problem of data loss when saving with
compression. TIFF's use a compression scheme called "lossless". JPEG's
use a "lossy" form of compression. TIFF is good. JPEG can be *VERY* bad.

Thanks.

I on a short deadline with this and my pictures are orginally .jpg format
and didn't want to hav to take time to convert to tiff. If I save the jpgs
as tiffs and the file is huge, do I want to compress or resize to get a
smaller file without losing resolution.

If you haven't saved the JPEG's as TIFF's yet then continue with the
JPEG's. If you use the compress feature in Publisher then if I recall
correctly Publisher will resample the images and compress them. You
might just be better off making a .zip file of the Publisher document
before you send it.

Thanks for the help. Just wanted to make sure everything will look ok. I
guess it may not even matter since I am converting to .pdf for the publisher.

As long as the creates the file at a 300 dpi, I should be ok. Correct?
