Reinstall Office on replacement computer

J

Joe B.

One of our laptops is dead. I bought a new one and need to reinstall office
2004 Student edition for the kids. I can't uninstall it from the dead
computer, but I do have access to the old drive data. Can I use the old
license or can I deactivate the old license?

Any suggestions (or links) on moving the data from the old drive to the new
one?

thanks

Take the CD and install on the new laptop, simple as that. Copy the
saved data to the location desired.

If you also want to move files from your old laptop, first physically remove
the hard drive. If you turn your laptop over, one of the panels on the side
should be able to be removed using a screwdriver. You might have to look
around as their is probably also a panel for the memory there.

Once you have your hard drive removed you can connect it your new desktop PC
or laptop using an adapter. What you want to purchase is a laptop hard drive
to USB adapter so you can use it as an second hard drive.

That was quick response! I guess I was a little vague.

On the install, There is a 3 license limit for office student, so I'll need
to deactivate the old license (I assume).

What files contain the data (date/address book) for outlook? They should be
in the default location, I just don't know where that is or what they are
called. The drive is in an external case and the files are fine. Just the
motherboard is dead.

Thanks again.

The OP specifically mentioned the "2004 Student edition". If the OP does
mean 2004, is the EULA for the Mac Student edition the same as Office STE
2003? Too many unknowns. And Tom's right - if the OP does mean Mac software,
he really should post in the Mac newsgroup.

You're all correct. My original desktop came with the single user license
version (2003?). When I later added the laptops, I purchased the multiuser
version. I didn't have the software in front of me at the time of the post,
but I knew it was the next version AFTER 2003. It has 3 licenses, all used.

It is not a mac.

Sorry for the confusion.

Right. The dead laptop was the third. So if I try to install it on the new
one, once it's here, will I be prevented from installing? Or is it more of an
"honor system" thing. If I need Microsoft to release the old license, I'd
like to get that ball rolling before I start installing the new system.

Thanks, again. This became more complicated than I anticipated.

Install it, Activate it, if it balks, use the phone number it provides
to call and activate that way. What's complicated?
