Remaining resource units

Greetings;

I am using MSP 2003 for sheduling resources for a client. They wish to
assign resource units for each resource only once. They do not wish to
evaluate the remaining hours each month. For example, resource A is to work
10 hours per month for 10 months for a total of 100 hours.

They also like to see the actual hours spent on a monthly basis but do not
wish to see a change in the total hours planned for the resource.

This creates a problem when entering actuals. For example, if for the first
month, resource A worked 5 hours instead of 10 hours, the 5 hours not worked
gets redistributed over the remaining 9 months. They do not wish to see this
as they consider those hours to be "lost" and want to see 10 hours per month
for the remaining 9 months = 90 hours (instead of 95 hours)

Conversely, if for the first month resource A works 20 hours, MSP
recalculates the remaining hours to be 80. They want to see 9 months
remaining at 10 hours per month equals 90 hours (instead of 80).

The problem for me is the number of tasks and resources is pretty sizable
and I have to adjust the remaining hours for each resource for each task to
match the baseline for each month.

Other info: Effect on schedule is not a factor. All tasks span 1 year
regardless of how many hours are worked, or not worked on the task. There is
little to no interdependancy. I have set the tasks to fixed duration and non
effort driven.

Is there a way to "hold" the remaining hours for each resource regardless of
how many hours worked to date without having to adjust each resource
remaining hours manually?

I've been copying down from the baseline but this is also tedious.

Thanks for the help.

No. Basically it reads like your customer has a Task list and not a
schedule, so why not use Excel? If there really are a lot of tasks to
update, then a VBA macro can do what you want.

If you set the task type to "fixed units" and restore the task finish date to
what it was prior to updating the actual work you should maintain your month by
month future work.
