remove titles from the open box

After I delete a file in my Word 2003 documents, the titles remain in the
open box. When select one I am told to get permission but I have the machine
set for unrestricted permission.

Are you referring to the My Recent Documents list in the Open dialog box?
You can click the Tools button, and choose Clear Document History, to get
rid of it.
