Removing an item from the standard toolbar

How do you remove a button or item such as file, view or edit from the
standard tool bar?

File, View, and Edit are not on the Standard toolbar. They are on the Menu
Bar. If you really want to remove them, you can do so using Tools |
Customize. With the dialog open, just drag the menu from the Menu Bar.

As Suzanne indicates these are menu items not toolbar buttons. I am not sure
why you would want to make things difficult for yourself by doing this, and
if you were doing it for others, there's nothing to stop users putting them
back. As for customizing the toolbars, there's a little arrow at the right
hand end of the standard and formatting toolbars which you can click to find
options to disable default toolbar entries.

How does one go about putting the items back onto the Menu Bar? Someone
removed the FILE and EDIT buttons.
