Removing projects from resource pool, 2003

JennyK

We've got a number of old projects in our project list that will eventually
be archived once we understand how to this.

in the meantime, our resource planner is unhappy as they are using resources
from the resource pool and therefore giving her an inaccurate view of her
resources.

Is there a way of unlinking (for want of a better word) projects from the
resource pool, such that we retain the information from the projects for
future learning but that they are not pulling from the resource pool?

many thanks

Hi JennyK - try this:

In the indivudual project file that you no longer want to use the pool,
select Toos/Resource Sharing/Share Resources. Select the option "Use Own
Resources" which will copy resources from the pool into the local file. The
resource pool remains untouched, except for the resource assignments to the
former file are cleared. The file is now independent of the ResourcePool.mpp
file.

If the project.mpp files are not available, and you only have the
ResourcePool.mpp:
In the Resource Pool.mpp file Tools/Resource Sharing/Share Resources...
Select the files you no longer need, select "Break Link"

Howerver, re-opening the older project.mpp file will re-establish the link
to the ResourcePool.mpp until you do the first procedure. What we did in
this instance was to also rename the ResourcePool.mpp file... but be careful
because will cause problems for someone else.

To add to Jim's correct answer, I would add that damaged links can cause
file corruption. The safest way to break a link is:

1) Open your project and the pool project in read/write mode
2) Follow Jim's instructions to use local resources then close and save BOTH
files. This prevents possible corruption and breaks the link from both
files.
