I have renamed My Documents. But the new name is not reflected in the Office
My Places bar. Does anyone know how to correct this?

Where did you rename "My Documents"?

Hi Spinner,

The MS Office Places bar names are user definable.
If you're in Office XP or 2003 right click on the
item you wish to rename and select the 'rename' option.

You will have to modify the Places bar manually. Depending on the
version of Office you have, you may need an addin to do this. In later
versions, you can select the folder you want to add and click the
Tools menu on the Open dialog box (or other dlgs that use the places
bar). To remove unwanted items, right click to get other options.

However, know that I would strongly suggest that you do not rename the
My Documents folder. This is a standard default folder and many apps
ASSUME that folder will be there...so you may end up with conflicts
when they try to look for that default location.

It would be better to just add your own custom folder versus messing
with changing My Documents.

Gordon:
Thank you for the Question. Heres the response:
I believe, I renamed it in the Start Menu. I am not certain of this (for, as
you know, there are so many ways to do everything). But, wherever I changed
it, the change “took†everywhere in Windows (including the actual folder
name). Do you have any clues, based in this?

Cheers,
Spinner

I have Office 2003. While you can add and rename other items in the My
Places Bar, you cannot rename My Documents, My Computer or My Network Places.

Dian:
Thank you for the feedback.
I am well aware of the ramifications of renaming “My nnn…†links and
folders. Further, I know how and where to tell all applications of the change
(if necessary).

For our own internal reasons, we change these. And I am delighted that
Windows XP (SP2) has significantly improved how these changes are affected.
As I said in my response to Gordon, I made the change in one place and it was
effected across the board (with the exception of the Office 2003 May Places
Bar).

Regarding modifying the My Places bar manually, see my response to Bob
(above).

Hi Spinner,

Yes, you're correct :) The 'standard places' in
the registry key
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Office\11.0\Common\Open Find\Places
can't be renamed (Word will recreate one with the original name
for My Documents) but it will point to the current location
of the Windows specially treated 'My Documents' folder when
you 'rename' or 'relocate' that folder
