Repagination problem

I had a very long document with a large contents table. I removed all the
contents except the 1st heading, then went to the contents and did an update
field. This caused a hang. It says 'word is repaginating document' but
nothing happens. Escape doesn't work.

If I remove the 1st heading then it's ok (it says Error! No table of
contents found, which I guess is ok).

I also noticed that in another document, if the 1st heading doesn't have a
page break before it, then updating the contents also causes a hang. Seems
that if the headings can move as a result of a contents field update, there
is a problem.

Make sure that there is at least one empty paragraph between your TOC field
and the first heading. Ordinarily you would probably have a page break as
well (or "Page break before" in the Heading 1 style), but this is not a
requisite.
