Resource Allocation: in after start of task , out before end of task

Hi,

I have fixed work tasks to which I would like to allocate resources (at
100% of their time) but only for part of the duration of the task.

For example:

Task1 is worth 20 days of work. I assign 100% of my first resource
-Tom- to it as well as 100% of my second resource -****. The task will
therefore take 10 days to execute.
I also know that my third resource (yes - Harry), will become available
for 3 days after Task1 has started.
How do I reflect that? As soon as I assign Harry, he is assigned from
first to last day. how do assign Harry for 3 days only (he starts after
Tom and ****) and also needs to come off Task1 before they do.
Of course, I would expect that Task1's duration would decrease as a
result of having a 3rd resource working on it, even if it's only for a
few days).
I have attempted to manipulate allocated hours in the resource usage,
but that doesn't appear to be way to go as it has no impact whatsoever
on the task's duration.

Hi Philippe,

Welcome to this Microsoft Project newsgroup :)

From the Gantt Chart, Window/Split. Select the task in the top window, then
right-click in the bottom window and select Resource Schedule. There you
can enter a delay from the start to meet your requirements.

FAQs, companion products and other useful Project information can be seen at

Hope this helps - please let us know how you get on :)

Hi,

My approach would be the following:

While in a Gannt view split the screen to show a "Resource Schedule"
at the bottom.

Create a fixed work task. Don't assign duration to it. Make sure it's
marked as effort driven.

We know that the amount of work is 160h (assuming an 8hr workday over
20 days). So lets add some resources in the bottom pane to it to
reflect that:
We know that Harry will only be working on the task for 3 days (or
24h). So we enter that in the resource assignment. This leaves 136h to
spread over the other two guys so you add in 68h for both of these.
Now click on OK. You should end up with a duration of 8.5 days

Now you can adjust the start date of Harry to show that he starts
working 3 days after the other two guys.

Does this address your issue?
