Resource Assignments vs Resource Availability

Using ProjectServer2003

When I compare weekly work hours for the future between the Resource
Assignments view grid and the Resource Availability grid many times the hours
are different. They seem to be both looking at work though.

My guess is that the assignments grid is going off the original assigned
work dates and allocations and that the availability work is adjusting as
resources log time to that task and the work shifts.

Is that correct and why we would be seeing differences?

As a follow up to this, the task usage view in Project Pro, the Portfolio
Analyzer view of the work for this resource and a direct SQL query to
MSP_WEB_ASSIGNMENTS table matches the Resource Availability view.

I'm not sure what the Resource availability is referencing and I'm not sure
what this view is intended for.

Any comments or ideas here?
