resource pool crash

a project linked to the resource pool was unlinked, saved. The resource pool
was saved as a new file using save as. Now all attempts to link any file to
the resource pool now causes project to crash and immediately close

Renaming the resource pool without having ALL projects linked to the pool
open and saved after renaming the pool will cause a crash sooner or later. I
suggest you:

Open all projects linked and unlink from pool
Delete old pool
create new blank resource pool
connect projects to new pool.

Sorry --- there was a typing deletion in the prior message. What it SHOULD
have said was:
A project linked to the resource pool was unlinked, saved. The resource pool
was saved. The PROJECT was renamed using Save As. Now all attempts to link
any file to the resource pool now causes project to crash and immediately
close.

Additionally, since this originally occured, I tried taking an existing
project (call this Project A) which was totally independant (no other files
linked to it and using its own resources) and assigned Project A to use
resources from a totally new empty file (call this New Pool) with the sharer
info taking precedence. This worked--sort of. I was able to save both files.
Then I unlinked Project A from New Pool and saved both files. Still, trying
to re-link Project A back to New Pool causes the MS Project to crash and
immediately close.

Any ideas where the problem lies?

Has any of the projects in your pool ever been over-written, renamed or
moved without first removing them from the pool? If the answer is yes to any
of those questions then a file corruption can result. Try the repair
solution at http://project.mvps.org/faqs.htm

If that doesn't work your file is corrupted, try and recover what you can.
You have to be very, very careful with resource pools and master projects
where the sub-projects are linked. They both use the fragile DDE technology
which is prone to corruption.

The answer to your question is no!!! I have tied the built in repair on the
disc now I will try the web site. I started using project in 1992 and this
just does not make ayy sence. Thank you for your suggestions I hope we can
come up with something

I have been all over the site you suggested but alas I find no repair
facility. Can you direct me please to the correct area? Thanks

Is the nature of the problem a FILE corruption of the resource pool, master
project, sub-project, or global? Or is the problem a DATA corruption within
the resource pool, master project, sub-project, or global? What info type is
"safe" to transfer to any new files; data, custom field definitions,
predecessor/successor links, custom reports/views/tables/filters....?

While there may be a chance I renamed a file while it was still linked to
the pool, why would that affect other pools in other subdirectories which are
linked to totally different series of projects?

Since this error first occured, I have been unable to re-link any project to
ANY pool. I have tried reinstalling, using a virgin global file, and using a
virgin pool. Using the virgin pool resulted in allowing one project file to
be linked to it, but it will accept no more, even with the first project file
removed.

My business is based entirely upon this program. Recreating everything is
virtually impossible to conceive... especially without any idea what I can
keep and how to avoid the situation from re-occuring in the future.

Hi Ray,

I think Rod was referring to file corruption: you could try the suggestions
in FAQ Item: 43. File Bloat? - Might be Corruption.

FAQs, companion products and other useful Project information can be seen at
this web address:http://project.mvps.org/faqs.htm

You might also try renaming the resource pool and saving it in the
original location with with the original name. It's been so long since
I've had that happen to me, I can't remember the particulars but it was
nothing nice, if you can get the pool open you can break the links and
relink them with Tools/Resource Sharing. GOod luck.

Thanks for the suggestion, that is the first thing I did but to no avail.
This whole thing is so unbelievable. Even calling microsoft support has not
produced any positive movement towards a fix. I guess I will have to try and
recreate my entire business (15yrs. worth) in the next coup;ef days!!!!!!!!!!!

Thanks for trying
