Resource Pools

Can I create a new project, only set up my resources, then have my other
already-set-up project files (with tasks set up) pull from the resources in
my resource pool project file?

I ask because everything I read tells me that I need to set up resources in
my individual projects first, then go to each project individually and choose
Tools-Resource Sharing - use resources - Resource Pool, and choose "Pool
takes precedence"

What I am asking is if I can do this backwards and just set up all my people
in one brand new project file and somehow set it to be shared with my (10 or
so) existing other project files.

Thanks all...

Hi Lamby,

Yes.
Just do as you propose
Set up the pool with the resources
Leave open
Now open your projects
Tools, Resource, Share Resources, use resources from... your pool
Now they are "available" for allocating in your project.

Hi Lamby74,

Yes-you can set-up a central resource pool, to which you can connect all
your other projects. Essentially, just open a new file, input resources (no
tasks)...and save as something like "Central Resource Pool" (stating the
blindingly obvious). When developing a project, you'll need to have the
respool file open. This has some excellent benefits, especially if you're
using multiple projects with the same resources. There are, however, some
aspects that you will need to consider:

1. Make the Central Respool a read-only file, otherwise anyone can
stuff-it-up...and rest-assured, they will.

2. You will need to replace all of your existing project resource-names with
those that are in the pool.

3. All "personal data" against each resource, will be applicable to all of
your projects. So things like the Std Rate will apply throughout.

4. Make sure that everyone uses it...so that way, you'll begin to get
consistency and standardisation across all projects within your company.

5. Make sure that your project-calendars are set-up in accordance with your
resource calendar.

HTH.
