Resource Problem

A colleague of mine has assigned resources to a project in Project 2003.
They're working a 6 hour workday and assigned to a task at 50%. The
resources should be working on the task for 3 hours a day but Project shows
them at 3.9 hours a day. I have asked my colleague some questions that were
obvious to me. My group is new to Project 2003. I've worked a lot with
Project 2000 (and Project 98 before that). Any ideas?
