Resource Roll Ups

I need some help understanding how resources work and baseline work roll up
in the resource usage view. Here is the process: (we are using Project 2000)

We saved 3 tasks all done by the same resource that were under a summary bar
and the summary bar to a baseline. Total hours and baseline hours were 240
hours when you viewed the resource usage view.

Next we added another task for the resource under the summary bar and saved
just that task as a baseline. Now if you view the resoruce usage view for
the resource. The baseline work for that resource is 240 hours, but the work
is 320 hours.

If you look at the task usage view you see the same difference. This is
what I have seen before. However I would expect the resource usage view to
not have this behavior. Is this correct? How does project calculate the
resource summary information?

thanks.

Jeff,
If I understand your post correctly it sounds like a simple matter of
not re-baselining the Summary line. Non-baseline fields in Project are
automatically calculated at the Summary line level as long as
Tools/Options/Calculation is set for "automatic". However, all baseline
field values are static. That is, they are simply a snapshot at the time
the baseline is set. They are never calculated by Project and they do
not automatically roll up.

From your example it sounds like the baseline was initially set on the
entire project and showed 240 hours of Work and Baseline Work at the
Summary line. Then when the new task was added, the Work field
automatically summed up the additional hours to show 320 but since the
baseline was only updated for the added task, the Baseline Work did not
get updated to show the additional work hours. It doesn't matter which
view you are using, the baseline fields are all static.

Hope this helps.

Hi John and Jeff,
This is inetresting.
I am using customised fields to calculate traffic lights and getting strange
results when there have been re-baselined selected tasks. I thought that the
problem was the team leaders had not clicked the 2 "roll up to summary" boxes
when they rebaselined. Would that fix the problem John?
It looks like I should also check the tools/ options calculation.
While on this topic, how useful do you finfd Baseline 1/2/3 etc when the
latest baseline doesn't become "Baseline"? Or am I missing something?
Regards..........Pratta
