resource utilization

If I have a resource working 50 % of the time on 2 projects , I can use
the max uits column and set it to 50 %.

Is there any way to set the max units for A GIVEN RESOURCE DIFFERENT at
different points in time ?

In essence , I am trying to accomplish the scenario below

Resource A Jan 1 - Jan 31 60 % on Proj A , 40 % Proj B
Resource A Feb 1 - Feb 28 50 % on Proj A , 50 % Proj B
Resource A Mar 1 - Mar 31 80 % on Proj A , 20 % Proj B

This is normally the case where resources from Proj B start rolling off
and start on the next proj A.

Thanks

mankoni,
I looks like you may be getting Max Units confused with assignment
level. The max units for a resource describes how much of a resource,
(or resources if a resource set is used), is available in a working
period (normally a working day). Assignment level on the other hand is
the amount of a resource that is assigned to any given task. For example
a resource whose max units is 50% can be assigned at a level of 10% to 5
tasks simultaneously without being overallocated.

The answer to your first question is no, the max units for any given
resource is fixed over the span of the project, unless of course the
user changes it at some point. In other words, it cannot be time-phased
like the resource's rate.

There are various ways of handling "resource roll-off". One is to simply
set the max units for the resource in each project's Resource Sheet to
match his/her full working time. Then assign the level as necessary in
each project file. For example, let's say Joe works two projects. He is
currently working project "A", but will "roll-off" to project "B" in the
future. Set Joe's max units at 100% and then use the assignment level to
handle the roll-off.

A variation of the above is to set up a separate resource pool. Again,
the resource's max units accounts for his full availability on all
projects. His assignment level in each sharer file accounts for his work
on each project.

Hope this helps.

Hi mankoni and John,

Just a quick clarification. A resource's maximum units can be contoured
over time. If Joe is finishing up Project A for the first two months of
Project B, and I want to set his maximum units in Project B to 40% but then
increase to 80% beginning in the third month it can be done.

Double click on Joe's name in the Resource Sheet to show the Resource
Information dialog box. On the General tab under Resource Availability,
leave the first "Available From" to "NA" set the Available To: equal to the
end of month two and set the units at 40%. In the next row down, set the
"Available From" to the start of month three, leave the "Available To" to
"NA" and set the units at 80%.

As John noted, this is per project file. So if you have created Joe as part
of a resource pool file, you will need to leave his maximum units in the pool
file as the total unit availability for all projects attached to the pool and
remember to set the correct assignment units when you assign Joe.

I hope this helps. Let us know how you get along.

Julie,
I stand corrected. I completely missed that basic functionality for
resources - to quick on the "trigger" I guess. Thanks for spotting and
correcting my error.
