Resource Working time.

Hi,
I am stuck up with my project planning and need to complete asap. I have a
particular resource, who is on leave from the 19th to the 22 Oct and his
tasks starts on the 5th Oct . The duration of the task is 50days.

I go to the Changer Working time and select the particular resource to nark
the days he is on holiday, but my end date does not shift accordingly,
irrespective of whether i am selecting the days as holiday or not.

Am i missing something?? I am using Project 2003 Standard version.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Hi Mike

I checked the Advance Tab and pls find below the details:

Task Name; DLL Coding & Unit testing
Duration: 50d
Estimated: Unchecked.
Deadline: NA
Constraint Type: As soon as possible
Constraint Date: NA
Task Type: Fixed Duration
Effort Driven: Unchecked
Calendar: Non
Earned Value Method: % Complete

As per your advise, i seem to have no constraints, but i just wanted you to
glance thru and let me know whether i have unconciously done some mistakes.

Thanks a lot for your advise and help...

Hi Robert,

Because you have made the task Fixed Duration, Project assumes you know what
you are doing. Thus to maintain the logic of the formula Work = Units of
resource X Duration, it has reduced the Work to retain the Duration you
demanded.

From the Gantt Chart view, try Window/Split and see that the Work has been
reduced by the 4 days leave X 8 hours per day = 32, thus totaling 368 hours.
Change the task type to Fixed Units or Fixed Work, click OK to set that
mode, and then change the Work back to 400 hours the end date will shift as
you expected.

Hi Mike,

Thanks a ton for the advise and the help... It worked....

I have another query:

I have task that starts in the begining of Oct, wherein the duration is
about 40days. There's 1 resource working fulltime on this task, while 2nd
resource would be joining this task after completing the other tasks, in the
same project.

How can show that the 2nd resource would be starting his work on the 40d
task after completing the other tasks.

Hope i am not confusing you...

Robert,

I think what you are hoping to do--automatically assign a task based on
a condition (such and such a task is complete)--is not possible. PM's
assign resources to Project's tasks--Project doesn't automatically
assign resources.

What I would do is create a second task dedicated to the second
resource. Its predecessor is the one that has to get done before they
move to the new task (Finish to Start), and make a link to the task.
I'm thinking it should be (Finish to Finish) which means that both tasks
end at the same time--which is an attempt to make the two people work
together. If some other linking logic is better for the actual task at
hand, then by all means do something else.

You're welcome, Robert :)

Project cannot assign resources - that's your job! However, there are 2
possibilities.

1 Split the screen and right click in the lower pane and select Resource
Schedule. Select the appropriate task and against the resource enter a
delay to allow for the time he is not available.

2. In one of the Usage views, enter the the resource and put zeros in the
cells when he is not available.

In both cases you'll have to make an educated guess at the delays and refine
nearer the time. If you want more detail on this, please ask.
