Using Project 2003 Pro

Trying to get a handle on resourses. I am a home builder. I have several
subcontractors that handle the same tasks. For example I have 3 framing
crews.

Not all are equal. Crew 1 may take 3 days to frame a house, Crew 2 takes 4
days, and Crew 3 takes 5 days.

I want to have my schedule set up so that Project selects the crew that will
get the job finished at the earliest date, based on availability and how long
it would take each crew to accomplish the task. I want one and only one crew
assigned to the job. How can this be accomplished without having to manually
assign a specific crew to a specific job?

Project doesn't have the capability to automatic select a particular
resource. Think of Project as a "calculator". I can imagine how it
might be possible to write your own code in VBA to do that, but I can
also imagine how that would get complex.
