Retrieving old Publisher file

K

Ken Springer

In 1996, I created a manual for work using what ever was the current version
of MS Publisher at the time. I was probably using Windows 95.

The manual was broken up into sections (chapters), each section being an
individual file. Now I need to retrieve these sections.

Publisher 2003 will open some, but not all, of the files. When it doesn't
open a file, I get a message that 2003 does not support files from that
version of Publisher. Sadly, the software package was lost in a building
fire.

The best solution at my end, would be for someone who has a legitimate copy
of Publisher that old they would be willing to part with it and I'd pay the
postage.

A less preferable option at my end is to find some kind of conversion
utility that would read the .PUB file and convert it to MS Word of some
vintage. I have enough copies of Word to be able to work with the resulting
document and get it into Word 2003.

If someone has any other ideas that will work as well or better, please let
me know.

Thanks.

Hi, Don,

Opening in Publisher 2000 is an idea I hadn't thought of. And I don't know
why, as I think my brother-in-law has Office 2000 Pro!!!! Does that include
Publisher 2000? If it does, then the next time I'm at his place (2+ hour
drive) I'll take the files with me and import and save there.

Would you like me to post here what I'll be doing, or send an email to the
address listed at the end of your post?

Thanks for the offer to print in PDF, but I have a PDF printer driver. If I
can get the files, I can print them here.

Hi, Don,

Talked to my BIL, he doesn't have Publisher with his verion of Officwe 2000.
I'm bummed.

I'll get you a URL where you can download the files when I have them
uploaded to the server, and you'll get an email from me to let you know where
they are.

Hi, Don,

I tried sending an email to your "typed" email at the end of your first
post. The email came back flagged as having fatal errors.

Knew what the AT and DOT were for. :)

I had MS Newsgroups, and Publisher in the subject line of the orignal
message. I'll just put Publisher Problem in this time and we'll see what
happens.

OK. Second email try is on its way.

Ken,

I use Webwasher as a email check for spam. It could have interpreted your
mail as spam and killed it. Put Publisher Problem in the Subject box and
try it again.

The AT in the address is @ and the DOT in the address is a . (period).

Give it another try.
