Run Outlook 2003 in background

Is there any way to run Outlook 2003 in the background? I am asking because I don't like having a tab always open on my toolbar but still want to be notified whenever there is a new message in my inbox.

Right click the Outlook icon in the Notification Area and choose Hide when
minimized
