save as error

for some reason in the last week when I try to save an Excel or Word file
with a new name I get an error that the file is not accessible. It indicates
an unavailable location, password protected or invalid characters. But I can
do it in non-office programs and explorer.

I experience this with Outlook.
When this happens, (Save your file of course)close the
program, go into task manager see if the Word or excel
process is still running. (I would bet it is) End task it.
and you should be able to open Word or Excel and save the
one file over the other.
If this is the case. you have to determine what is keeping
the process run even after you closed the program. My
ploblem was with another program that shared information
with outlook.
You are not using any non numbers or letters right?
Or finally, I have found this to happen if the path to the
file and the file name exceeds 254 characters.
Hope one of these leeds to something for you.

If you have Office 2003 and Windows XP, and if you installed update
KB885250 in the last week, try uninstalling KB885250 in Start | Control
Panel | Add/Remove Programs.
