Save-As file type in W2007

The file type used with Save-As in W2007 seems to selectively change from
machine to machine. By that I mean, when I choose File> Save-As to a file
that existed and I've modified, and the file type is .docm, the file type
stays .docm with the new file name I type in. When a coworker chooses File>
Save-As with this same .docm file, it changes the file type to .docx. If he
is not careful to notice this when changing the file name, he’ll end up with
a different file-type too, losing the macros in the process.

I know there is an option in Word Settings under Save for default. My
coworker’s and mine are both set to .docx as the default. So I do not
understand why we have a different result with File> Save-As. He has a
laptop, I have a desktop. We are both using XP for operating system.

Has anyone else found this out and have a fix for it?

Here too the file type defaults to docx when using Save As > Word Document.
This appears to be the normal intended behaviour.
If you use SaveAs > Other formats, you are offered the same filename c/w the
docm extension.
Either way it us usually preferable to save macros in templates.

But note that you can click directly on the Save As command (under the
Office button) which takes you directly to the Save As dialog box; then
you'll get the behavior of previous versions of Word.

or you can press the F12 function key.

Apologies to all as I see I never gave feedback on suggestions here!

It turned out that my coworkers were using slightly different Save-as steps
than I which led to the saving as a .docx. It's these little nuances
sometimes that can drive you crazy.

Thanks to all who offered solutions here. I do appreciate the help.

That's even quicker of course.
