save fails

Office XP question: When I run any addins in word (adobe, math type), I lose the ability to save a document. Selecting Save or Save As results in no reaction from Word. (OS - XP professional) How can I resolve this issue?

Does this apply to *all* add-ins or just one. I can imagine the
circumstances where an outdated macro screws things up - but not where *all*
the add-ins cause problems. Remove them all and introduce one at a time to
see where the problem lies. Adobe's add-in can be problematic - make sure
you have the most recent and correct version. NortonAV's plug in is
notorious and should be disabled. Winfax Pro's add-in is frankly dreadful
and the Works add-in worse.

The only one running now is Acrobat, mathtype did the same thing so I removed it also, I turn the adobe on and off as necessary. It appears to be all of them.

I get this message " Saving the autorecovery file for Normal has been postponed" also. I guess this means all aspects of saving in word are unavailable.

When things like this occur you have to look to external factors. It sounds
suspiciously as though normal.dot is in fact corrupt. See if the problem
goes away when you rename it to oldnormal.dot. You can then open it in the
organizer and copy your customizations back to the new one that Word will
create.

Make a copy of the document in case something goes wrong.

Save the document as RTF. Close and exit.

Open the RTF file in Word and save as DOC. Close and exit.

It should be fixed.
