Saving files with Word 2002

Using Word 2002 to save to My Documents, two items appear in folder: 1) the article I've saved, and 2) a "ghost" copy listed as "~$(inserted in place of first two letters)<filename>." What causes this? Why? How do I get rid of it?

This a temporary working file, flagged as a hidden file, that should remain
while the document is open. It should however go away when the document is
closed. If it doesn't a spring clean is called for - see
