saving files

Hello.
I need to save all my email files from outlook. I went through the help
menu and did what it said, I exported the files by going to file, export,
etc. However, I was clueless when it came to the window that asked to select
a type of file. (options were dos with commas, windows with commas, etc. I
don't know what any of the options mean) so I exported several times using
all the options. I never got what i needed, which was a READABLE file. Some
of the files wouldn't even open. Only one option even allowed me to select
all the subfiles. there has got to be an easier way. How do I save my
outlook files as backup in case my hard drive ever gets zapped.

Close Outlook. Search for, and copy, your pst file. That holds ALL your
outlook data other than account details and rules. How to save those
depends on the version of Office you have, which you omitted to mention.
