saving files

hello.
i need to save my files from outlook in case my hard drive ever crashes. I
read in the help section that the way to do this was export the files and
then save that exported file onto a cd. well, i tried to do this but got
confused when it asked me to select what type of file i wanted. I didn't
understand any of the options, which were DOD with commas, windows with
commas, etc. So I tried saving using every option hoping one of them would
be correct. But I never got what I wanted which was a READABLE file. Some
of the files wouldn't even open. there has got to be an easier way. Can
someone help me do this please?

thank you mary.
Something is not right. I exported my email files. It created 4 files.
The files said they were large, 30 mb and above. However when i opened them,
it appeared that there was nothing there. Why is this?

Do NOT export pst files unless you are wanting to use the data in another
application. See my reply.
