Saving printed-outedness

If I open a document, then print it, then close it, Word 2000 asks me
if I want to save the changes I made to the document.

Is there an advantage to resaving it? What exactly is being saved?
The most recent print date or something?

This might only happen when there are fields in the document. But it
happens even if the fields couldn't possibly be changing (such as with
page numbers).

You're right on all counts. Even if you save the document just before
printing, Word will (by default) update fields when you print. If you're
confident that you have made no other changes, you can safely close the
document without resaving. In some cases, such as when you have a SaveDate
field in the document and have just opened it to print (having made no
modifications and therefore not resaved it), you specifically *don't* want
to save it. But if you do save it, then the PrintDate will be up-to-date,
which can sometimes be helpful information.
