Saving spreadsheet

I have a very large password protected spreadsheet. When I save instead of
saving the updated spreadsheet a back up copy is created. This is creating
problems as I don't know which copy to delete. Please could someone advise
why this is happening and how to correct it?

If you have sensible options set (i.e. always create a backup), then when
you save the file the workbook.xls file will be the latest version, and the
Backup of workbook.xlk file will be a copy of the previous version you'd
saved.
Wisest not to delete either of them, but the date and time should show you
that the workbook.xls is the latest and the backup the earlier one. [Note
that if you open an Excel file it will temporarily change the timestamp to
current time, but it will go back to its previous value if you close it
without saving.]
