Saving to previous versions of publisher

Have a Publisher 2002 file that I am trying to save as a Publisher 2000
version. Get message box that states there is a picture that is too large
to be saved to previous versions of Publisher.

The problem started after installing SP2 for Windows XP. After uninstalling
SP2 for Windows XP was again able to save Publisher 2002 file as Publisher
2000.

The problem still happens on other computers that have Windows XP SP2
installed.

Other posts regarding reducing the size of pictures or disabling Norton AV
did not work. Even with all pictures removed and AVG installed, still
receive above errors.

This problem happens even with publisher files that have no pictures and
seems to be related to whether or not SP2 for Windows XP has been installed.
If SP2 has not been installed the save works with no problem. It is only on
computers that have SP2 installed that the save does not work.

The computers are not all the same, however on any of the computers, when
Windows XP SP2 is removed, the publication saves to an earlier version.

I think I found a workaround, especially if one does not have access to a
graphics editing program:

In Publisher, right click on the image and click Paste.
Open Paint (under Accessories in Windows XP)
click Edit, then Paste
The image will be pasted into Paint.
You don't need to make any changes to the image
Still in Paint, click Edit, then Copy
Back to Publisher, click on the original image to select it (sizing handles
will be visible)
Right click on the image and click Paste
This replaces the original image with the image from Paint

This seems to reduce the size of the image so that the conversion works.

Depending on the number of images, may just want to do the above for all
images, or do one at a time, trying the conversion after each one.

Do you mean Copy?
This seems to reduce the size of the image so that the conversion
works.

It also reduces the resolution of the graphic to screen resolution - NOT
good if you're creating a print publication.

I found this solution worked for me. If you don't have an image editing
program and if the original image has been resized (smaller height and width)
in Publisher, try this:

In Publisher, right click on the image and click Copy.
Open Paint (under Accessories in Windows XP)
click Edit, then Paste
The image will be pasted into Paint.
You don't need to make any changes to the image
Still in Paint, click Edit, then Copy
Back to Publisher, click on the original image to select it (sizing handles
will be visible)
Right click on the image and click Paste
This replaces the original image with the image from Paint

This pasted images is smaller (kb) and the conversion may work.

Depending on the number of images, you may want to do the above for all
images, or do one image at a time, trying the conversion after each one.

Brian,

I have been following your replies to other posts re: the compression issue
and, while reducing the kb of the images does allow the conversion, I have
found that this is not a problem with Publisher 2002 and Windows XP SP1. I'm
only having the problem on computers that have Windows XP SP2 installed.

I've not used Publisher 2003.

I'm mostly concerned with getting the publications to people who have
earlier versions of Publisher. Screen resolution graphics are fine
for these publications.

What I always try to warn against, though, is the transfer of production
files for editing in both version 2000 and 2002/3, as this is highly
impractical (especially with this new issue)
None of the posts in this Newsgroup, regarding this issue, gives a
reason why the conversion works fine on computers with Windows XP SP1
but is a problem on computers with Windows XP SP2 installed.

That might be because no one actually knows yet.

Good point re: transfer of production files for editing.

My need to convert to 2000 is for saving as HTML web pages. The 2002
Publisher to XML format doesn't work for my needs and I haven't found another
way to easily get Publisher to HTML except by converting to 2000.
