Saving word file

Using Word 2000

First, I create a word *.doc file from a template. I then
edit the word *.doc. Next, I can only save the file as a
template *.dot.

Any suggestions on avoiding this pitfall?

It sounds as though you created the new document by opening the template
file, e.g. File/Open something.dot. Correct?

In this situation, then use File Save/As menu, and change the file name
to something with a *.doc extension. Or adjust the "save as type" at
the bottom of the file save as dialog box.

If you did create the file by opening the template, then next time do a
File/New and pick the template from which you want to make a new document.

No, the file I open is *.doc. When selecting the Save As,
the dialogue box shows *.dot in the file name line and
Template in the file type line, this line is greyed out
and I cannot select any other file type.

Either the document is actually a template (Word can tell the difference
regardless of the file extension) or you have contracted a virus.
