scroll with mouse wheel does not work only in Office 2007

scroll with mouse wheel does not work in most of the Office Pro 2007
applications on Vista Ultimate (Dell Optiplex 745, generic Dell USB mouse,
all bought three days ago). I can scroll with the mouse wheel in the help
windows, any generic Windows applications (e.g. Internet Explorer) so I know
this is not a hardware failure. The problem is somewhat strange because when
I move the mouse over the text area in MS Word 2007 and rotate the wheel it
does nothing but when I move the mouse over the scroll bar and rotate it does
scroll the text as expected. I tried Dell support but their answer was that
it is Office 2007 problem. I was wondering if I missed a hidden setting
somewhere that fixes the problem. It seems that the issue is very common,
just try to search internet for "scroll mouse wheel problem in Office 2007"
and you get lots of links that described exactly this problem.

I have the same issue. Anyone know of a fix?

I installed a bluetooth mouse instead of the USB one and it works as
expected. I think reinstalling or upgrading to the newest driver for the USB
mouse would help. See the comment below.

After reading some of the other posts to this group I decided to
- Uninstall and reinstall the mouse driver

This solved the problem!
Scrolling now works properly.

But, I use a laptop, and when I go to control panel, the only mouse
settings I see are for my touchpad.

I want to change the settings for my USB device. Is there a separate
place for USB mice settings???
